Fly Away is the fantastical journey of a man whose name is never known. We come to know him through his quest for mastery along a series of fateful encounters. A cycle of wins and losses leads him to a profound confrontation. Questions of autonomy, control and interdependence come into stark focus.

Fly Away is a live puppet show inspired by the Bunraku style of Japanese Puppet Theatre. An original hand-crafted puppet is guided by a veteran cast of puppeteers set to an original score by John Aylward performed by oboist Hassan Anderson. The show is co-created by Derek Fordjour and Nick Lehane as a central feature of Fordjour’s solo exhibition event, SELF MUST DIE, on view at Petzel Gallery November 13 – December 19, 2020.

Running time: 28 minutes. Masks required.
